switching rooms

With some possible news on the adoption front we decided to start moving the kids around. The first room we needed to change was the spare room becoming Gavin's room. Our spare room is the only bedroom downstairs in our house. I have loved having both kids upstairs with us but since there are only 2 bedrooms upstairs and the master bedroom one of the children was going to have to sleep downstairs. So since Gavin is the oldest we decided on him. The only problem with this plan was he loved his current room. He had a pretty cool loft bed that had to stay in that room because that room is not big enough for a bed to sit on the floor with much room left. So the loft bed not moving to the new room we knew would be disappointing on top of the fact that he would be the only one sleeping downstairs we knew it might be a hard sell. When we pitched the idea to Gavin we told him he could pick any bedding he wanted and told him since he wouldn't be sleeping so high anymore his dog could finally sleep in bed with him. He decided both of those sounded good enough and agreed to be the one to move. He picked Star Wars bedding and his MeeMaw (my mom) bought the bedding for him. Because I have no idea how to put the pictures where I want them the pictures of his finished room are in the middle of this blog post.

The challenge for us became changing a fairly girly canopy bed into something that looked sort of boyish and doing that on a pretty strict budget since we are saving as much as possible to head to Thailand. I searched Pinterest but didn't find anything that was cheap or easy. However, if you are ever looking for some in depth bed plans (like a bed shaped like the ship on Star Wars) head to Pinterest. I mentioned to my husband it was to bad we couldn't take the posts for the canopy of the bed off and put light sabers on instead. He looked at me and said "oh we can do that". Gavin was spending the night with my mom the next night so I said oh good let's do it now. We went to Target and bought 8 dollar light sabers for the bed posts and a Darth Vader cheap mask that Darryl ended up mounting to the headboard. We got the paint at Lowe's for a great deal! 1 can was in the oops section so it was 50% off and the other we got a discount on because paint was on sale. So for less than $50 we had all the supplies we needed to change his room. We decided to stay up late while Gavin was at my parent's house and surprise him when he came home the next day. He was so surprised and excited about his new room that it made up for the somewhat negative aspects of the move. We were excited we got the whole room done so cheap and so quick.
Next up for us is changing his old room into a Tangled room for Makayla but we have until Christmas for that one. It's going to be her Christmas gift this year. We are making changes slowly so everyone here has lots of time to adjust. Which is oddly not a luxury our adopted child will get to have. Her whole life will be flipped upside down when she comes to be with us.
